Cultural Heritage Center Jan. 20 program discussing Rural America in the 1950s

PIERRE, S.D. — Participants in the next book talk at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre will get a glimpse of what it was like to grow up in Rural America in the 1950s.

The Pfeiffer Sisters, who grew up on a North Dakota farm in the 1950s, will share information from their recent book “While the Windmill Watched: A Slice of Rural American in the 1950s.”

The free program will begin at 7 p.m. CST (6 p.m. MST) on Thursday, Jan. 20. Guest speakers Jackie Pfeiffer McGregor and Janine Pfeiffer Knop will speak via Zoom on the big screen in the Jay D. Vogt Education Room at the Cultural Heritage Center. People may attend the program in person or join via Zoom on their own devices. Attendance at the Cultural Heritage Center will be limited to 25 people. People must register at www.sdhsf.org to attend either virtually or at the Cultural Heritage Center.

Jackie and her husband, Bob, now live near Colville, Wash. Janine and her husband, Fred, farm near Atlantic, Iowa. Growing up, the girls were watched over by their parents and the windmill that tirelessly provided them with the water vital to their survival. Their stories are told in four voices in the book: Jackie, Janine, the two together, and the windmill.

The program is part of the History and Heritage Book Club, sponsored by the South Dakota Historical Society Foundation, the nonprofit financial partner of the South Dakota State Historical Society at the Cultural Heritage Center, and the South Dakota Historical Society Press.
